Directory traversal vulnerability in (1) Openfile.aspx and (2) Html.aspx in HTTP Commander 4.0 allows remote attackers to view arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the file parameter.

It has been reported that HTTP Commander is prone a directory traversal issue allowing a remote attacker to traverse outside the server root directory by using '../' character sequences.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to gain access to sensitive information, which may be used to mount further attacks against a vulnerable system.

HTTP Commander version 4.0 is reported to be prone to this issue, however other versions may be affected as well.

HTTP Commander V4.0 contains a flaw that may allow a malicious user to traverse directories. A remote attacker could send a specially-crafted HTTP request to the Openfile.aspx or Html.aspx script containing "dot dot" (/../) sequences in the file parameter to traverse directories and view directory listings and arbitrary files outside of the Web root directory.

Upgrade to version 4.1 or higher, as it has been reported to fix this vulnerability. It is also possible to correct the flaw by implementing the following workaround(s): Filter malicious character sequences in a HTTP proxy or firewall with URL filtering capabilities. Additionally, placing the web root on a seperate drive letter will mitigate future possibilities of directory traversal attacks.
